The first stage of the Fair Work Act 2009 will come into being on 1 July 2009, replacing the old Work Choices legislation.
Are you ready?
Some of key changes that you need to know about, and act on immediately are:
Unfair Dismissal
From the 1st July, employees are required to work for six months before an unfair dismissal claim can be lodged, or 12 months for organisations with a smaller employee base (less than 15 full time equivalent (FTE) staff).
Employees will only have 14 days to bring an unfair dismissal claim instead of the current 21 days.
Redundancies
From 1 July, 2009, employers will be required to demonstrate that redeployment across the business was considered prior to termination in a redundancy event.
Collective Bargaining
From 1 July 2009, employers must bargain collectively in good faith with employees who want a collective agreement regarding their workplace conditions.
